Cartilage

Cartilage

it is a connective tissue composed of cells (chondrocytes) and fibres(collagen or yellow elastic) embaded in a film. it is more elastic than bone.

General features

1. cartilage have no blood vessels or lymphatics. the nutrition of cells diffuse through the matrix.
2. cartilage have no nerve . Therefore they are insensitive.
3. cartilage is surrounded by a fibrous membrane, called perichondrium. The articular catilage have  no perichondrium, so that they regenrate after injury is inadequate.
4. when cartilage calcifies, the chondrocytes die and tha cartilage is replaced by bone.

Types of cartilage

there are three types of cartilages

1 Hyaline cartilage

2 Fibrocartilage

3 Elastic cartilage

Hyaline cartilage:

  • ,Location- In tha articular cartilage of long bones eg. ribs, sternum
  • Colour- Bluish white in colour
  • Elasticity- Flexibile

Fibrocartilage:

  • Locatin- In the intervertebral disc of pubic symphsis, sternoclavicular joint.
  • Colour-Glistening white
  • Elasticity-More firm strongest

Elastic cartilage:

  • Location-In the pinna, external auditary meatus, eustrachian tubes.
  • Colour-Yellowish
  • Elasticity-Most flexible
